Rosacea Part 2

My fellow quirky little beauties,

Rosy glow anyone?
As promised, today I will be discussing the joyous causes, symptoms, and triggers of Rosacea.

Firstly, no one knows the true cause(s) of this inflammatory skin condition which is why there is still no cure. There are various theories determining its disposition – some say it’s genetic, others that it’s a vascular disorder, others that it’s a bacteria living in your digestive system that causes a protein called ‘bradykinin’ to overproduce which in turn dilates the blood vessels causing flushing, redness and spots or even that the cause of rosacea are little mites living on the surface of the skin in unusual numbers (absolutely fantastic :-S!)

Of course, none of this explains why we would be having mites on our skin or any of the above for that matter- something must have happened in our bodies that would trigger such disasters right? However, not enough research has gone into it to be able to cure it! God Damn those lazy buggers!

In my experience, the contraceptive pill is what seems to have triggered my permanent misfortune (and that’s an understatement!) as I was given a strong dosage of hormones for my petite frame which overloaded my poor, previously stable hormones.

If you suffer from redness on your cheeks, forehead, nose or chin and/or have visible blood vessels and/ or experience little red spots similar to a rash that may have whiteheads, then I suggest you consult a dermatologist and have it properly diagnosed as you may be suffering from it too.

Things like sunshine; spicy food; dairy; alcohol; chocolate/ processed sugars, seem to trigger mine but there are other triggers- Read this for a comprehensive list of triggers http://www.rosacea.org/patients/materials/triggersindex.php

It can be confused with Seborrheic Dermatis which I also seem to have (for goodness sake- I seem to be a crap magnet!), but I will talk about that in more detail on my next post so keep an eye out!

I once did a little experiment where I drank two litres of water a day, ate tons of fruit and veggies took Omega 3,6 &9 supplements from Udo’s choice along with pomegranate and chlorella tablets, plus had the simplest skin care routine of cleansing and applying jojoba oil from MV organics (best one I’ve found) to my skin as a moisturiser…and within a month TADAA! wondrous improvements! But I am skin care obsessed so couldn’t resist the temptation of buying into more unneeded, useless crap!! Shame on me…I know!

I have now come to terms with it and since stopping the pill I am a lot less emotional about my imperfect, blemished skin… But you know what they say: if you can beat them, join’em, at least I don’t have to apply as much blush! And there are worse things…

Rosacea/ Seborrheic Dermatitis- A nightmare before Christmas!

Warning- LONG but INTERESTING POST!

My fellow quirky little beauties,

Apart from the occasional periodic spots, my skin was fine before the contraceptive pill.  In fact, it was great! Those were the days when I just rolled out of bed and went out because I did not give a crap! Though now I realize that the only reason why I didn’t give a crap was precisely because I had ‘great’ skin and did not need an ounce of make-up to make it look better. Ain’t it funny when they say ‘you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone’? No it isn’t… I agree!

Back then, I had never taken the contraceptive pill. Right before Christmas 2007, three months after I started my monthly course of oral contraceptives my skin, body and hair went NUTS! I was bloated, my hair started thinning, I lost weight (I am pretty skinny naturally, so I looked like a walking skeleton) and most horrendous of all, my once great skin was not so great anymore… it was spotty :-0 Dum Dum DUH!!!

Rosacea/ Seborrheic D. flare-up!
Skin is clear if careful!
The spots were/are not conventional acneic spots. They are rather small, red bumps with occasional whiteheads and hardly ever blackheads. They occur predominantly on your cheeks (that’s where mine congregate and have little group meetings :-S ) but can also appear on your forehead and chin. They often appear in clusters and are accompanied by a red tint to your skin. You might also suffer from broken capillaries and feel a slight burning or tingling sensation if you use harsh skin care products because rosacea/ seborrheic dermatitis skin is by nature very sensitive. Rosacea flare-ups can come and go, depending on your triggers so you might not always have it apparent. There is no cure but it can be controlled.

As I experienced no side-effects in the first two months of taking the pill, when I started getting these symptoms, I had no idea what they were, so I thought it was because my diet had changed as I previously lived in China (even though I had been in England for 1 year already before I went on the contraceptive pill, so my diet had already been different for a year with no problems…silly me).
So I continued to take microgynon -pill and started living a really healthy lifestyle (hard because I love my junk food)

However, 4,5,6 months later, I was worse than before so I knew that it had to be the pill. Within 4 years, I swapped and changed to 5 different pills – microgynon, marvelon, yasminelle, yasmin and finally a progesterone only pill, cerazette, which stopped my periods completely (now, I know they’re a pain, but I would rather wait ‘till menopause for that, thank you very much!)

I went to the dermatologist in SK:N clinics UK where I paid something like £120 for a 10 min consultation where the doctor diagnosed me with rosacea and prescribed me products that no longer existed.

Word of advice: never go to a doctor of any sorts, telling him what you THINK you have, because that’s what they will latch onto and won’t do a proper analysis. In other words- never self-diagnose! Unfortunately, no one told me that, so I went in saying I thought I had rosacea and BAM 10 minutes later, £120, no analysis, and an empty prescription. Yes, Yes I know she (or rather me, since I self-diagnosed) was correct for the most part, but because of the not so great experience I was in doubt of what I had with no money for a second opinion for the following 4 years!!!

I have now been off the pill for 1.5 year and only now are my periods starting to get regular. Right after I stopped I had some blood tests done and apparently my hormones had gone wild!

Last week, 4 years later, I finally got my second opinion from channel 4 nutritionist & dermatologist doctor Claudia Louch who diagnosed me with Seborrheic Dermatitis- GOD DAMN IT, why can’t things be simple?! It can turn into rosacea, or can happen in conjunction with rosacea, but for now she thinks it’s only seborrheic dermatitis – ohhhh, so that’s what it is…gee thanks :-S!

The cause is still unknown but it is believed to be a yeast infection, hormonal imbalance, low immune system, etc (I will explain both rosacea & seborrheic dermatitis in more detail in a later post).
She asked me to get some blood tests done as she thinks the onset of my disease (lol) was the contraceptive pill (hormonal) which caused my immune system to break down (again… let’s keep the good news coming hey?!)

Yesterday, I went to my GP because I did not want to pay the extortionate amounts for private health care and she told me that microgynon was too strong for my petite (48 kg- 7.5 stones) body mass and that microgynon pill should only be prescribed to people with 60 + kilos! I just HAD to laugh! Ain’t it funny when the person who is supposed to know exactly what they are doing, doesn’t! and messes up your system completely? No it isn’t…I agree!

PS- I do NOT want to encourage ANYONE to stop taking the pill at all!!! Oral contraception can be great and if you have no side-effects, by all means continue to use it! Most of my friends did not have any side-effects, and in fact, for people whose hormones are imbalanced or you suffer from Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome, taking the contraceptive pill might possibly make your skin better. I just urge you to really talk to your GP to measure your weight and all-encompassing factors before deciding on a pill. If you are 7.5 stones, the amount of hormones you will need for the contraceptive to be effective will be less than someone who weighs 10 stones.

This is just the onset of my rosacea/seborrheic dermatitis. Who knows if things would’ve been different?

Part 2 will be more generic where I will explain the different causes, symptoms and triggers that can cause rosacea/ seborrheic dermatitis to flare up.  I will also be doing a ‘first impressions’ for my experience with Claudia Louch- Harley street clinics, and the holy grail product I had been searching for,  so keep a look out!

Professional Beauty Show 2012

My fellow quirky little beauties,

Who else went to the Beauty show in Excel London?
Whoever did, who’s as obsessed with skin care as I am, probably went through the same thrilling emotions as I did as soon as they saw the ‘Professional Beauty 2012’ entrance in PINK- Could a girl ask for more?! I nearly passed out!

There were so many beauty brands exhibiting their products in one single arena, from authentic organic beauty such as the gorgeous Pai organics to aromatherapy specialists- Aromatherapy Associates, to giant corporate enterprises such as Clarins, Dermalogica and DeclĂ©or and wonderful British luxury skin care line, Elemis - all you had to do was take your pick!

Less readily available brands also decided to make an appearance in excel this week such as South African made and owned Environ sold solely through beauty therapists as well as Image, along with Spa Fabulous who I learned is currently developing a product alongside Lisa Snowdon- very interesting.

And guess what?! Apart from one of the above mentioned brands, I have tried them all, so keep a look out for future product reviews.

I also managed to steal some time from the gorgeous Sarah Brown-Pai Organics, for a little chat about her products. The story behind the brand is extremely inspiring; especially to those who suffer from particularly troublesome skin conditions (if you read my previous post, you’ll know that unfortunately ‘troublesome skin’ is my middle name!). If you do not know the story by now, (shame on you!), Sarah’s constant skin allergies compelled her to start the cleanest, plant-based skin care on the market. Five years later, Pai products are sold in over 40 countries and have received glowing reviews from customers and press- I have tried this line and will be reviewing it in the next couple of months as I also have a couple of samples to try out- so watch this space!

Anyway, I write too much, if you have got this far I am seriously chuffed! Thank you!

Los & lots & lots of love <3,

Rita A.

Welcome to my blog!

My fellow quirky little beauties,

This is extremely exciting for me! For years I have been meaning to start a blog, but was afraid I would run out of things to write about, or that I would bore you to death or no one would be interested in what I had to say, I could go on...

But, not anymore!

When I got the sudden urge to start writing a blog, I was still doing my BA. My experiences with skin care/ beauty/fashion were few and far between as I had no cash to splash (not that that’s changed now), and no dodgy skin conditions to worry about (oh boy, if only that was still the case). I had always been passionate about beauty, but I was not as fascinated by it as I am now. And trust me, I use the word ‘fascinated’ lightly, it’s more like an obsession, but let’s not focus on that too much!

If you had met me five years ago, there is no way you would have read my blog, not even if I ran around naked with “READ MY BLOG” tattooed across my boobies, simply because I wore NO make-up and used NO skin care, and my sense of fashion was worse than dragon lady-Hilary Devey (my apologies Hilary).

My fascination, shall we call it, for beauty arose five years ago after I developed what looked like a bad rash all over my cheeks. I later learned it was rosacea or more recently seborrheic dermatitis- it’s complicated and I will explain in a later post, don’t worry- you’ll soon wish I didn't!

Since then I have tried numerous beauty products, so many in fact, the money I have spent on them has been sustaining the beauty industry. The good news is, I can now share all my past, present and future experiences with you in the hopes that I can help you find your one and only holy grail, battle your skin calamities, or simply cheer you up.

If you met me now, you’d see that my skin is not perfect, my nails are smaller than a five pence coin because I bite them too much and my hair is always messy, but I hope  that does not stop you from reading my blog.

For now, expect to read, product and service reviews, make-up and fashion looks, favourites of the month, beauty thoughts & knowledge, general life experiences, branding/marketing posts, and whatever else I feel the need to share.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to read, I hope you can relate and enjoy what is to come!
